About the Program

Sprinturf’s Material Testing & Compliance Certification Program was developed in partnership with Firefly Sports Testing to give architects, engineers, specifiers, and facility owners clear material documentation.

Material expectations continue to evolve, particularly around PFAS, hazardous metals such as lead, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Design professionals and owners increasingly require validated compliance rather than assurances. This program delivers that by confirming every certified product meets today’s most relevant and scientifically supported standards.

Independent Validation

All testing and certification are performed by Firefly Sports Testing, an independent program validator. Using an independent validator provides objective, consistent evaluation of materials and removes the uncertainty that comes with vendor-provided or self-generated documentation.

Testing Methods

Test Method	Certification	What It Verifies
EPA Method 1633		PFAS. The only validated test method designed specifically for solid materials. Covers 40 compounds, including the nine the EPA identifies as being of greatest concern for human health.
EN 71-3		Migration of restricted elements, covering 19 hazardous metals including lead and cadmium. Uses simulated gastric acid to measure only the portion that can actually leach out, making it more health-relevant than total content testing.
ASTM F3496		Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content, sometimes referred to as off-gassing. PAHs form when organic material burns incompletely.
ASTM D7138 (DSC)		Material fingerprinting, which confirms that the product installed on a field matches the product that was tested.

The program uses the most current and appropriate testing methods for turf and recreational surfacing materials. Each of these can be incorporated directly into project specifications and bid documents.

Not every method applies to every product type. Each product page lists the methods run on that specific material.

Certification and Documentation

Each certified product receives individual Certificates of Compliance, one per test method. Every certificate identifies:

- Product details

- Test method used

- Certificate and report numbers

- Test and issuance dates

- A QR code for instant digital access

Certificates are available here at any time, with no login or request required. QR codes on project signage and product documentation link directly to these pages, so verification is available on site, during design, and long after installation.

Material Traceability and Ongoing Verification

Certification under this program is not a one-time snapshot.

Certified materials undergo full testing on first adoption into the program. After that, products are randomly selected for annual re-testing via ASTM D7138 material fingerprinting. Additional testing is automatically triggered when any of the following occur:

- The product is selected for annual re-testing

- A raw material supplier changes

- A manufacturing process changes

- A test indicates a failure

- A product requires repeated retesting under program requirements

This maintains long-term consistency and protects design intent throughout the product lifecycle.
