Ruggers are amongst the toughest, most competitive athletes found in the sporting world and the requirements of the game surface are equally demanding. Players carry, pass, kick and ground the ball in order to score points and therefore, the field of play takes a beating in almost every play so there is no better solution for consistency, durability and safety than a Sprinturf synthetic turf field.
In March, 2009, the first American all-synthetic rugby tournament was held exclusively on Sprinturf fields on Randall’s Island in New York City. 48 teams fanned out on more than 1 million square feet of turf to play in the Four Leaf Fifteens Tournament hosted by the Village Lions Rugby Club. With teams competing at all levels of play, here’s what they had to say:
"A collection of "old boys" (over 35s) were initially skeptical about playing on artificial turf, [but] one game won each guy over. After the match they all talked about how much they liked the surface, how much better it was than they expected and were all excited about playing on these fields for the future. In short, one game won them over. If you can convince a group of old rugby curmudgeons, then anyone who plays will be excited about this surface.
Thanks for the excellent work done to the Randall’s Island fields." David Martin, captain, Gentlemen of New York, New York Rugby Club, “Old Boys” Team.
"The turf fields are a welcome relief. The fields are uniform in coverage and always level. They are soft to land on and do not give turf burns. Drainage is great and even in very wet conditions, the fields do not have standing water. The turf fields make playing rugby in the City a considerably more rewarding experience." Pat O'Keefe, Village Lions RFC, after hosting inaugural rugby tournament at Wards complex.
"I think [these Sprinturf fields] are great! The surface is ideal, and the crown on the field looks like it'll be enough to keep the field puddle-free, but wasn't so strong as to affect play." Heather Van der Hoop, U19 coach.
“Very cool experience, Bravo to all involved." Drew Fautley, coach, USA Rugby womens national champions New York Rugby Club
