| Purdy,
MO – The hit TV show Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition chose state-of-the-art turf company Sprinturf
as the playground surface for Camp Barnabas, a
non-denominational Christian summer camp where
special needs children and their siblings experience
an awesome, life-changing week of camp. Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition selected Wayne, PA based
Sprinturf to help resurface the playground area
for this project because the Sprinturf system
provided the highest degree of safety and increased
accessibility.
The
two-hour special aired October 16th on ABC and
took viewers through building three houses along
with a new playground area. Sprinturf provided
the design work, product, and installation crews
for the new playground area. SafTurf™, by
Sprinturf, is made exclusively for playgrounds
and was the obvious choice to help protect kids
as it satisfies both the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) with an approved Head Injury Criteria
(HIC) rating, as well as the American Society
for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F1292 compliance
for a 5’-10’ fall height.
Playing
on the original wood chip surface created severe
mobility problems for most of the children in
wheelchairs and other mobility support devices.
The uneven and often muddy and spongy surface
made simple rolling nearly impossible. Children
that wanted to use the playground apparatus couldn’t
even reach it. That’s where Sprinturf came
in to help transform this problematic surface
into a beautiful, safe and totally accessible
playground.
“SafTurf™
will allow children to access the playground and
play on the surface in almost any weather even
immediately following a rain shower with no water
or mud to wade through. And unlike sand and woodchip
surfaces that can be breeding grounds for insects
and bacteria, SafTurf™’s all-rubber
system harbors no such harmful contaminants,”
commented Sprinturf’s Marketing Coordinator,
Crystal Parsons.
