Sprinklers will be a thing of the past at Concordia University

Sprinklers will be a thing of the past at Concordia University, Nebraska’s Bulldog Stadium. The playing surface will have a new look as renovations to the field are slated to begin next week. Concordia is installing a new synthetic playing surface, Sprinturf.

“The university has considered the installation of an artificial surface on its outdoor athletic field for some time,” said Concordia President Rev. Dr. Brian Friedrich. “We are excited to partner with Sprinturf to install a new surface that will make Bulldog Stadium one of the best multipurpose venues in the region.”

Sprinturf Inc., based in Wayne, Penn., is one of the leading U.S. manufacturers and installers of synthetic turf products for landscaping, golf tees and greens, recreational areas and full size stadium venues. Facilities of the Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, University of Montana and Utah State University all currently have Sprinturf surfaces.

“The benefits the new field surface provides are many. It will allow nearly unlimited usage for practices and games for our football and soccer teams; access for intramural and recreational events for the entire student body; and availability of a tremendous venue for grade school, high school and other teams in the area,” added Friedrich. “In addition, it will allow us to be better stewards of water resources and, in a brief period of time, it will pay for itself through decreased costs for upkeep and maintenance. It is also a first step in the process to prepare for the construction of the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.”

Sprinturf pioneered and installed the first successful all-rubber infill athletic fields and continues to hold important patents for all-rubber infill systems. Up to 30 thousand recycled tires are used in a typical field, tires that otherwise would have gone to landfills or been left by the side of the road. The recycled rubber is triple-washed and screened, making it the cleanest infill on the market.

A G-Max rating measures the shock attenuation or hardness of a field. Sprinturf fields consistently receive the same G-Max rating as a natural grass surface in pristine condition, which means that superior safety and playability is achieved.

In addition, Sprinturf utilizes Ultrablade. Ultrablade is the groundbreaking fiber that combines the unique characteristics of soft pliable fibers with unparalleled strength and durability.

Nemaha Landscape Construction, Inc. of Lincoln, Neb., will handle removing the existing playing surface and preparing the site for the new Sprinturf surface.

“Concordia is committed to excellence in all things,” Friedrich said. “This is one more example of that commitment. We are excited to inaugurate the new field surface in 2006.”
